In fact, little smokies have been part of parties since the 50s! Of course, the names have changed over the years. Back in the day, we referred to these little sausages as cocktail weenies, which were used as snacks to serve during cocktail hour.

The meat bites paired really well with a nice, refreshing cocktail. But the recipe for them has also changed. The sausages were usually just boiled, similar to hot dogs, as they were too small for the grill. But then people started adding sauces to them, and that’s when they became the perfect crockpot party recipe.
People would dump the weenies into a crockpot, cover them in BBQ sauce, and then serve them up once they were heated up. Now, we have learned new ingredients to add and different BBQ sauce mixtures to create the perfect little smokies crockpot recipe.
