That is when and where historians claim is the first written evidence of the dish. However, pizza was nothing more than a flatbread with toppings. There was no pizza crust; today’s traditional form of pizza wasn’t invented until 1889.

This means that the traditional pizza was a type of sandwich, a one-sided sandwich. People took their favorite bread, added sauce and cheese, and called it a day, like a pizza melt.

It only makes sense to go full circle and transform the flatbread into a pizza and then into a full-blown sandwich. In fact, some may say it is a great idea; all we need is this simple pizza sandwich recipe to turn cheese sandwiches into delicious pizza sandwiches.

Panini Maker Substitutions

This pizza sandwich recipe is not an ordinary sandwich recipe. Instead, this recipe is a panini sandwich recipe that is filled with flavor and a combination of textures. A panini, for the uninitiated, is a sandwich that has not only been grilled but pressed firmly between the griddles.

This makes for a flatter sandwich, more akin to stuffed flatbread, a new twist! Of course, not everyone has a panini press. Luckily, the goal is just to melt the cheese inside the sandwich and give it a bit of crispiness.
